2. Key Insights

Honor 70 Strengths:

  • Superior Display: The OLED display offers a more vibrant, high-contrast viewing experience compared to the Moto G35’s LCD.
  • Faster Performance: The Snapdragon 778G+ chipset provides significantly better performance for gaming and resource-intensive tasks.
  • Better Cameras: The Sony IMX800 sensor and overall camera system provides higher resolution, larger sensors, and a dedicated macro lens. The phone has better video capture features and higher quality photos overall.
  • Much Faster Charging: The 66W charging is dramatically faster, meaning less time tethered to an outlet.
  • Better WiFi & Bluetooth: The Honor 70 has the advantage of WiFi 6 & MIMO, and Bluetooth 5.2 with LDAC/APT-x.
  • More RAM and Storage options: The Honor 70 offers more options for RAM (up to 12 GB) and storage (up to 512 GB).

Motorola Moto G35 Strengths:

  • Better Outdoor Visibility: The 1000 nits brightness means the screen is much more usable under bright sunlight.
  • Newer OS: Android 14 offers the latest features and security.
  • Slightly Better Battery: Although the difference is small, you'll likely squeeze out a bit more battery life.
  • More Accurate GPS: The QZSS support makes it more accurate at geolocation.
  • eSIM Support: This provides more flexibility for travel.
  • Dolby Atmos and 2 microphones: Moto G35 is better for voice recording, and watching videos with the support of Dolby Atmos.
  • Screen Protection: Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is superior to the unknown glass protection of the Honor 70.

Trade-offs and Limitations:

  • Honor 70: Lacks screen protection and the display brightness isn't specified, which makes it worse for usage in bright sunlight. The device has a slightly smaller battery and doesn't support an eSIM.
  • Motorola Moto G35: Significantly less powerful chipset, camera, display quality, and slower charging.

3. User Profiles and Recommendations

  • Honor 70: Ideal for users who prioritize display quality, performance, and camera capabilities. It's a great fit for gamers, content creators, and anyone who wants a premium media consumption experience. The Honor 70 also makes an excellent choice for general usage for anyone that isn't planning to use it outdoors.
  • Motorola Moto G35: Best for users who need a reliable phone with a bright screen for outdoor visibility, a long lasting battery, and a newer Android OS. It suits casual users, budget-conscious buyers, and people who prioritize practicality over top-tier performance. The Moto G35 would be a better option for people that would like to record calls/audio in noisy environments and are watching videos on the device.

4. Buying Decision Framework

Here are three questions to help you decide:

  1. Do you prioritize display quality and performance? If yes, the Honor 70 is the clear winner.
  2. Do you need a phone that works well in bright sunlight? The Motorola Moto G35 is better for you in this case.
  3. What is your budget? If you’re on a tight budget, the Moto G35 provides the essential features without breaking the bank.

Scenario-Based Recommendations:

  • Scenario 1: Mobile Gamer - Honor 70 provides a better gaming experience due to its powerful chipset and screen.
  • Scenario 2: Casual User - Motorola Moto G35 offers a good balance of essential features at a lower price.
  • Scenario 3: On-the-Go Photographer - Honor 70 is better for photo enthusiasts who want the best possible image quality.
  • Scenario 4: Outdoor Enthusiast - Motorola Moto G35 will be much better for you thanks to its bright 1000 nits display.

My Choice:

I'd choose the Honor 70. While the Motorola Moto G35 offers a few perks such as the bright screen and newer OS, the Honor 70 wins on the aspects that matter most to me: a superior OLED display, much better performance for demanding apps, a better camera system for high-quality photos and videos and significantly faster charging. The lack of screen protection can be solved with a screen protector. The lack of an eSIM is not a huge deal, and I wouldn't be using the phone outdoors very often, therefore the lack of brightness wouldn't be a big issue for me either. For me the Honor 70 has better features that are more relevant in my day to day, while the Moto G35 is more of a general usage device that is good at everything, but doesn't have any special features that are worth noting.
