Here's why:

The differences in display quality (AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate), performance (Dimensity 900 chipset), and camera capabilities (108MP sensor) are substantial and would make using the phone much more enjoyable on a daily basis. I value smooth performance and a high-quality display for media consumption and the M53 provides that without breaking the bank.
The M53's faster charging and lighter build are also important factors for me. The absence of a telephoto lens is not a major concern since the other camera improvements (such as the much higher resolution main and selfie camera) are more important. The added macro lens and 4K video recording is a nice benefit. In addition, while the lack of expandable storage is a downside on both, the 128/256GB storage options available on the M53 should be enough for most users.
In conclusion, while the Samsung Galaxy A12 serves as a basic entry level phone, the superior quality and performance of the Samsung Galaxy M53 makes it a much better investment, especially if you are not on a very strict budget.
