  • Better Display: The AMOLED panel provides richer colors, deeper blacks, and superior outdoor visibility compared to the Redmi 12's IPS LCD, also more power efficient for dark themes.
  • Smoother User Experience: The 120Hz refresh rate leads to noticeably smoother scrolling and animations.
  • Significantly Faster Charging: 65W fast charging means considerably shorter charging times compared to the Redmi 12's 18W charging, offering convenience for users with limited time.
  • Superior Camera Quality: Larger sensor and higher main camera resolution results in better image quality, especially in low light conditions.
  • Higher Video quality and more features: Records in 4k@60fps and has a superior slow-motion mode. It also features PDAF, laser autofocus, and ultra-stable video.
  • Enhanced Audio Experience: Featuring stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos, and Hi-Res audio, it offers a much more immersive and richer audio experience.
  • More RAM: Up to 12GB of RAM offers better multitasking and long-term performance.

  • Reverse Charging: Offers 9W reverse charging capability, allowing it to charge other devices, a feature the Realme lacks.
  • Newer Bluetooth Version: Might offer slightly better power efficiency and stability.
  • Gyroscope: Enables a better experience in games.

Trade-offs:

  • The Realme GT 5G sacrifices battery life and a slightly more compact design for significantly better performance and a superior display.

4. Decision Framework

Key Questions for Buyers:

  1. How important is performance to you? If you are a gamer or a power user, the Realme is the obvious choice. If your needs are more basic, then the Xiaomi will suffice.
  2. Do you value a premium display and audio experience, or do you prioritize battery life and a larger screen? The Realme has the best display, audio and performance, but the Redmi will last longer and give you a larger screen.
  3. What is your budget and do you need the most up-to-date OS? The Redmi is the better choice if you are looking for a more affordable option, with a newer Android version.

Scenario-Based Recommendations:

  • Scenario 1 (High Performance): If you prioritize performance for gaming or heavy multitasking and need the highest quality display and audio, choose the Realme GT 5G despite its higher price and shorter battery life.
  • Scenario 2 (Balanced Use & Battery): If you prefer a good balance of features, decent performance for everyday use, larger display and longer battery life, and are on a tighter budget, the Xiaomi Redmi 12 is more suitable.
  • Scenario 3 (Casual user): If your main use cases are browsing, media consumption and basic productivity and you also want a more recent version of Android, the Xiaomi Redmi 12 is the clear choice.

My Choice

I would choose the Realme GT 5G. While the Xiaomi Redmi 12 offers a larger screen, longer battery life, and a newer OS, the Realme GT 5G's superior performance, outstanding AMOLED display, superior camera quality, much faster charging, better audio and higher RAM make it the better choice overall. I value the significantly smoother user experience, better gaming performance and the overall higher quality of the device which makes the premium price worth it. While the battery life is shorter, the 65W charging ensures it is always quickly recharged. I also greatly value the camera quality and the higher video recording quality, especially at 4k@60fps and the superior slow motion capabilities, as well as the advanced audio features. For me, the added cost is justified for the substantial increase in overall performance and quality.
