4. Decision Framework

Key Questions for Buyers:

  1. Do I prioritize raw performance or battery life? (OnePlus 9 for performance, Xiaomi for battery)
  2. Which camera features are most important to me? (OnePlus for higher-end image quality, Xiaomi for versatile modes like Macro and Portrait)
  3. How important is future software support? (OnePlus offers a guaranteed upgrade, while Xiaomi's support is less certain)

Scenario-Based Recommendations:

  • Scenario 1: High-Performance Gaming & Professional Photography: Choose the OnePlus 9 for superior processing power, advanced camera capabilities and enhanced video recording.
  • Scenario 2: Everyday Use & Versatile Photography: Choose the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 4G for longer battery life, versatile camera modes (macro and portrait), and budget-friendliness.
  • Scenario 3: Balanced Use: Consider the OnePlus 9, if the higher price point is affordable as its features are more future proof, or Xiaomi if a lower price point is more important, sacrificing on the superior processing, connectivity and camera quality

My Choice and Why

Given the choice, I would select the OnePlus 9. While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 4G offers a compelling package with its larger battery, macro lens, and lower price, the OnePlus 9's superior performance is too significant to ignore, especially for a power user like myself. The Snapdragon 888 chipset offers a noticeable difference in daily usage, enabling smoother multitasking, faster loading times, and a vastly superior gaming experience. Additionally, the OnePlus 9's camera provides better low-light capabilities and superior wide-angle images, along with higher quality video with its higher framerates and resolution options. While I appreciate the convenience of reverse charging and the macro lens on the Xiaomi, the raw power and image quality advantages of the OnePlus 9 ultimately outweigh these benefits. The confirmed upgrade to Android 13 also means the OnePlus 9 will have a longer software life. The trade-off in battery life is acceptable for me as I have charging access, but it may not be for everyone. In terms of price to value, if prices are similar it is clear OnePlus 9 has the better value, if price is far more favorable for the Redmi, that could be a better option for a value-driven decision.
