  • 5G Connectivity: Supports 5G networks for faster mobile data speeds.
  • Higher Video Resolution: Offers 8K video recording, great for content creators needing high-resolution footage.
  • More RAM: Optional 12GB RAM configuration is better for demanding users.
  • Enhanced Audio Features: Dolby Atmos, noise cancellation microphone, and 3 microphones for better sound experience.
  • Known Screen Protection: Uses Corning Gorilla Glass 5, providing better protection against scratches.

Huawei Mate 50 Pro Advantages:

  • Higher Display Resolution: Sharper display with higher pixel density for more detailed visuals.
  • Newer, More Powerful Chip: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip for better performance and efficiency, despite being a 4G chip.
  • Telephoto Lens: Offers optical zoom for better clarity when capturing distant subjects.
  • Faster Wireless Charging: 50W wireless charging, more convenient for wireless charging users.
  • More Versatile Battery: Offers reverse charging to power other devices.
  • Higher Storage Options: Up to 512GB internal storage for users with large media libraries.
  • Better GPS Accuracy: Supports more satellite systems for better location tracking.
  • Camera Performance: Higher DXOMark scores, suggesting high quality photos and video.
  • Additional Sensors: Barometer for altitude and pressure readings.

Trade-offs:

  • The OnePlus 9's lack of telephoto lens limits zoom capabilities, while the Mate 50 Pro doesn't have 8K recording.
  • The Mate 50 Pro lacks 5G capabilities, which could be a disadvantage in areas with strong 5G support.
  • The Huawei Mate 50 Pro's screen brightness appears to be either incorrectly reported or an error because a screen with 0 nits brightness would not be usable. Assuming there is an issue with the specification provided, the Mate 50 Pro's brightness is unknown and may not be as bright as the OnePlus 9.
  • The OnePlus 9’s black & white camera, while present, is of questionable practical value for most users.
  • The Huawei Mate 50 Pro’s operating system is not listed, which could be a potential concern for users looking for a specific Android experience.

  • Viewing content such as movies on a sharp screen.
  • Navigating using a complex GPS location, and using the barometer sensor for weather updates.

4. Decision Framework

Key Questions for Buyers:

  1. How important is outdoor screen visibility for you? If you regularly use your phone outside in bright sunlight, the OnePlus 9 is the clear choice due to its much higher brightness.
  2. How critical is zoom photography? If you take lots of zoomed photos, the Mate 50 Pro with its telephoto lens will be a better option.
  3. Do you need 5G connectivity? If you need 5G capabilities, the OnePlus 9 is the only option.

Scenario-Based Recommendations:

  • If you need a reliable all-rounder with strong outdoor visibility and 5G: Choose the OnePlus 9.
  • If you prioritize camera quality and zoom capabilities, as well as advanced wireless charging: Choose the Huawei Mate 50 Pro.
  • If you are an outdoor user who needs good outdoor visibility, and also want the best camera quality: Consider the OnePlus 9 if 5G is required, otherwise consider alternative options.

My Choice

If I had to choose between these two phones, I would choose the OnePlus 9.

Reasoning:

While the Huawei Mate 50 Pro has some compelling advantages, such as a better camera and faster wireless charging, the significantly brighter display on the OnePlus 9 is a key factor for me. I frequently use my phone outdoors, and the ability to easily see the screen in sunlight is essential. Additionally, the missing 5G on the Huawei is also a downside. The OnePlus 9 also has slightly better audio features and the inclusion of 8k video recording for high-quality videos.

The other feature gaps in the OnePlus 9 are not as impactful as the display difference, the zoom camera is nice, but not as essential to my daily usage as a bright screen and 5G connection. While the benchmarks are slightly better on the Huawei, the real-world performance differences in everyday tasks are likely to be negligible. The OnePlus 9's 12GB RAM option and slightly more detailed wide-angle camera are also minor advantages. Therefore, the OnePlus 9 is the better fit for my daily use and needs.
